UPDATE: Kaliningrad Region’s govt says to ship banned goods by sea
(Adds last three paragraphs)
KALININGRAD/MOSCOW, Jun 20 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Kaliningrad Region will deliver by sea sanctioned goods that have been banned for transit through Lithuania, spokesman for the regional government Dmitry Lyskov told PRIME on Monday.
“Everything in the sanctions list has been banned. We will redistribute the logistics chains for these goods using ferries and deliveries by the sea,” he said.
Earlier in June, the Lithuanian railways have notified Kaliningrad railways of termination of transit of some goods, sanctioned by the E.U., since June 18. The transit of oil products to the Kaliningrad Region will continue until August 10.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Lithuania’s decision to stop transit of some goods through the Kaliningrad Region is unprecedented and is seen by Russia as illegal.
“The decision is unprecedented. It violates everything possible. We understand that it is connected with a corresponding decision of the European court to expand the sanctions to transit. We see it as illegal as well,” he said.
The situation is more than serious, it is an element of a blockade, and will need a deep analysis before formulating the measures that is to take place in the few next days, Peskov added.
